As previously mentioned, I'm trying to grow tomatoes from seed this year. Given that I've never successfully grown tomatoes, this might be a little ambitious. But so far so good.
They start out as such unbelievably tiny things. I ordered them from containerseeds.com and the weight of the package was all envelope.
After they sprouted and had a few weeks to grow their first true leaves, I did a downselect and chose the healthiest-looking ones for transplant to larger cups. (I think 15 tomato plants is plenty for growing in containers, don't you?)
[At this point in the post, we went on vacation, went on a Girl Scout camping trip in the rain, and got massive head colds. Sorry about the delay.]
15 tomato plants? Try 18. I didn't have the heart to cull any further. They're very happily ensconced on the porch, and I will be forever known to the cafeteria staff at work as "the pickle bucket lady". (Really. My entire division had an ice cream social, and over the strawberry ice cream, the catering guys are asking how the tomatoes are doing. These are Good People.)
And, so it doesn't feel left out, here is the rest of the garden:
There are beans out front, but they don't know about the porch. Sssh.
There is something so intense about new plants springing up. That photo with all the tomatoes in those pots just really grabbed me. Thank you for that.

They smell pretty intense, too -- I can't wait for the fruit!
